During
2010, we rang one less peal than last year – seventy eight. The
heavy snow caused the cancellation of a number of peals in December
which meant no peals were rung then. The last month that did not have
any peals was June 1962 and March 1949 before that.
The
first peal at Little Eaton was rung. The twelve bells have moved from
their previous home and now hang in the Jopp’s garage. The bells
date from 1927 and were used in a carillon at the University of
Sydney until hung for ringing in the late 1970’s in Stoulton,
Worcestershire.
The
Central Council meeting saw a number of peals rung in the area -
Derby St Peter, Ticknall and Youlgreave - in addition to these, peals
were rung at Derby St Luke and Duffield for the Association.
A
peal was rung at Ticknall in celebration of Reverend Canon Dr John
Davies being appointed as Dean of Derby. A peal was also rung for the
100th anniversary of the re-casting and re-hanging of the bells at
Ilkeston. The report from the Bell News at the time was very
interesting as they had to enlarge the Church and moved the tower
40ft - full details are on the blog.
Congratulations
to Richard Freemantle, who rang his first peal at Stanton in Peak - a
super set of light bells. Helen Taylor rang her first peals of Caters
and Royal during the year. A flurry of peals later in the year saw
people ringing their first of London (Luke Heaton), Glasgow (Mike
Lilley) and Bristol (George Fletcher). Others also collected firsts
of Bristol Maximus and Stedman Sextuples (fourteen bells) in hand.
On
the numbers front, Pat Halls rung her 2,400th peal with another peal
being her 1,700th for the Association. Bob Smith rang his 1,400th
hand bell peal in September. Also on hand bells, Emma Humphrey rang
her 500th peal in October, with 10% of these rung on hand bells. Well
known ex-Derbyshire ringer, David Sansum rang his 1,999th peal at
Ault Hucknall. Eight hundred and ten of his peals have been rung for
the the Association. One new method was rung - Ella Surprise Royal at
Duffield.
One
member who had rung peals died this year - Griffith Lawrence,
Honorary Life member from Old Whittington. Griffith rang one peal,
his first, in 1948. This was the first on the new treble after
augmentation to six bells.

Peal
Fees
Peal
fees are currently charged at 50p per rope. They should be sent to
the Peal Secretary, with details of the date, place and method rung.
Please forward this as soon as possible after the peal has been rung,
and this is particularly important if the peal was rung at the end of
the year. Thank you. |
