This
report and its statistics are based upon quarter peals that have been
published in the Ringing World between 06.02.10 and 01.02.11. The
parentheses show the comparable figures for 2009.
The
total number of quarter peals attributable to the association is 299
(344). The number rung in each district and the number of towers at
which quarters were rung are as follows; also shown are the number of
ringable towers in each district with five or more bells with the
percentage at which quarters were rung, and the leading towers. Last
year's figures are in brackets.

The
number of churches at which quarters are rung for Sunday services on
a regular basis appears to be limited to Etwall in the Central
District, Darley Dale, Tideswell and Youlgreave in the Peak District,
and Derby Cathedral and Derby St Peter in the Southern District. It
is likely that the vast majority of quarter peals by association
bands are rung either in order to provide extended practice,
developing the skills of improving ringers and consolidating those of
more experienced ringers, or just for fun. In any event the sense of
achievement and camaraderie involved are often sufficient incentive.
This year there were fewer touring bands visiting the area with only
twenty quarters rung at association towers by visiting bands.
Congratulations
are extended to the 16 (17) ringers who rang their first quarter peal
and to Tom Chillingworth who conducted his first quarter peal,
several of them are younger ringers and of course they represent the
longer term future of the exercise and so are to be encouraged. A
good many of these took place during the Peak District’s Quarter
Peal Day and the Central and Southern Districts’ Quarter Peal Week
during which many other ringers achieved firsts of one kind or
another. These are the performances of those ringing or conducting
their first quarter peal

Amongst
several milestones of personal significance were Caroline Peverett’s
1000th quarter peal and Richard Angrave’s 500th quarter peal.
Graeme Hughes and Alec Humphrey rang their 600th together and Nick
Daines, Chris Gilbert and Alec Humphrey their 100th together.
The
Peak District Wednesday afternoon band continues to break new ground,
including in their weekly attempts no fewer than four demanding and
previously unrung and unnamed methods and are to be congratulated on
this.

As
ever Plain Bob is the most commonly rung method, no fewer than 34%
[41% ten years ago] of all quarters being in that method and 49% [29%
ten years ago] were of treble dodging methods. 70% [70% ten years
ago] of quarters were rung using six bells and 26% [24% ten years
ago] using eight bells. Viewing the graph showing the total number
of tower bell quarters rung over the decade it would seem that the
relatively high figures from 2004 to 2008 appear to be declining,
however it would only need one or two enthusiasts to take up the
torch (or sally) of quarter peal ringing for this situation to be
easily reversed.
