Chairman's Report

2011's activities started with the ADM held in freezing January weather.  The first tower of the day was Swanwick where we enjoyed this fabulous six.  The cold weather had shrunk all the ropes and each ringer needed a box!  Then onto Ripley where regrettably one bell was out action.  The meeting itself was held at Belper where we enjoyed a good service, a warming tea and ringing after.

Our February afternoon out took us to Breadsall, Allestree and then onward for some challenging but very enjoyable ringing at Derby St Luke.  We were joined by a number of visiting ringers which was much appreciated.

The striking competition heats were held at Etwall in March.  Colin Aked again kindly agreed to be  the judge for the day.  Belper, Duffield, Etwall and Sutton entered teams for the Arthur Ashby Cup and Mugginton for the Horsley Cup.  Belper, Etwall  and Mugginton went through to their respective finals.

The District was host to the Association AGM in April.  Norbury and Mayfield bells were the lead-in towers before the ringing, service and meeting at Ashbourne.  A splendid ringers' tea was generously provided by Ashbourne ringers and friends.

The May evening event was held in fine weather at Mugginton.  This fixture continues to be very popular: it was well attended and provided ringing for all abilities.

The June outing took us to six towers in and around Cheadle and along the Churnet Valley.  The weather was glorious and the towers provided a good range of straight-forward to rather tricky-to-handle bells!  All the ringers enjoyed a pub-supper at Ashbourne on the way home.

In July, the Pot-Luck Striking Competition at Brailsford was not so well attended as previous years.  However, September's Young Ringers' afternoon was well attended at the easy-going six at Mugginton.  Thanks to the instructors for a very beneficial session.

The District fielded a band for October's Eight bell competition on the pleasant ring at Darley Dale and rang well.  October's other event was a well-attended mid-week evening practice at Duffield.

The first week of November was the district quarter peal week.  Eight quarters were scored from ten attempts with many towers' ringers represented.

Our final event for the year was December's Carol Service held this year at Church Broughton.  We had a busy hour of ringing before a very pleasant service followed by warming mulled wine and delicious mince pies.

The District continues to provide well-attended, sociable and enjoyable ringing events throughout the year. Thanks once again to all incumbents and tower captains for making bells available and to all participating ringers for making 2011's events a success.
