Secretary's Report

The year started with the ADM at North Wingfield with some excellent ringing including Superlative and a good touch of Stedman.

February saw our district’s turn to organise the annual dinner.  An excellent dinner was enjoyed at the Fox and Goose near Old Brampton.  Unfortunately, this was not well supported by the other districts.

The striking contest heats were held at Barlborough in March, Old Brampton went on to represent the district in the Arthur Ashby Cup, and Staveley in the Horsley Cup.  It was particularly good to see a young ringers band enter the contest. (and they didn’t lose!).  Thanks to Brian Sanders and Tracey Jones from Barnsley for judging this for us.  Also in March we ventured out of the district to a meeting at Sutton in Ashfield.

May saw our annual car tour, this time to the Stourbridge/Birmingham area.  Thanks to Andy Thackeray for organising this.  Fortunately, we were well supported by visitors as the turn out from district members was poor, however, we managed to ring just about everything from rounds and call changes to Bristol and Stedman spliced!

In June we held a social event aimed at Young Ringers at Eckington with a barbecue, games, hand bells, ringing on the ‘normal’ bells and the simulator.  This was a great success enjoyed by over twenty people and four dogs!  In June we also had a meeting at Wingerworth and enjoyed ringing Carters doubles.

In July we had a twelve bell practice at Youlgreave; a lot of our regulars were not able to make this, but we still had eighteen people and managed to ring plain hunt on twelve and Cambridge Royal.  For several people this was the first time they had experienced twelve bell ringing.

August saw another joint meeting with the Sheffield Branch of the Yorkshire Association, this time at Norton.

In September we had a Saturday meeting at Heath and Bolsover, unfortunately quite a disappointing turnout for this, but still an enjoyable meeting.

We entered a band in the eight bell contest in October; unfortunately we lost due to ‘conductor error’.  Also in October we had a meeting at Chesterfield, this gave a lot of learners their first chance to ring on ten bells.

Another Saturday meeting in November, this time at South Wingfield and Crich, followed by an impromptu meal out.

December saw a chance to ring on the newly overhauled bells at Staveley.  An excellent meeting (on excellent bells!) with a good turnout.

During the year we continued our successful idea of joining local practice nights, we visited practices at Dronfield, Creswell, Eckington, Killamarsh, Old Brampton and Staveley.

During the Association quarter peal month for the 100 years of the Ringing World, the district rang eight quarters, including many personal milestones.

Congratulations to members of the district who rang their first quarter in 2011 – Christian Yeomans, Chris Walker, Andrea Walker and Kayleigh Topliss, also Susan Hammond who rang her first quarter on New Year’s Day 2012.

Finally, I would like to thank all the tower captains and incumbents who have made us welcome over the year and the district committee for their continued support and assistance, particularly Sue Hall for the wonderful posters she produces to advertise our district events.

Anne Westman
