Peal Secretary's Report

2011 saw 4 fewer peals than last year – seventy four. However more resident members rang in more peals this year, which is a good sign.

It is good to see people progressing throughout the year. A number of people had firsts in methods new to them. Helen Taylor rang her first Surprise Major and Luke Heaton his first Stedman.

Two peals of eleven Triples methods were rung. The towerbell peal was scored in September after a number of attempts. However the handbell peal was rung at first attempt in May. This was the first ever time this group of methods has been rung in hand - congratulations to the band.

2011 also saw the first peals of Spliced Bristol S Maximus and Stedman Cinques for the Association, both on towerbells and handbells. We have not had a towerbell peal of Bristol Maximus since 1984.

Emma Humphrey rang her 300th for the Association this year and Bob Smith rang his 3500th peal. The first peal was rung on new handbells belonging to Richard Angrave. A peal at Darley Dale was rung by candle light after a power cut and a peal at Duffield was rung at the request of the primary school for their fair being held in the church hall.

This year, I’ve audited the peals rung by the active peal ringers and have adjusted peoples totals slightly. The online resource, Pealbase, is a very useful resource as it contains all peals since 1952. Details of the adjustments are on the Association website.

With the Queens Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, including the torch making it’s way through Derbyshire in June, there are many reasons to ring a peal this year. Why not try to ring one at a tower that has not had a peal recently?

Peals were rung in memory of local ringers: Fraser Mack (Ashford in the Water), Reg Moore (Melbourne) and Cyril Rowland (Youlgreave).

Peal Fees

Peal fees are currently charged at 50p per rope. They should be sent to the Peal Secretary, with details of the date, place and method rung. Please forward this as soon as possible after the peal has been rung, and this is particularly important if the peal was rung at the end of the year.

Thank you.
