Central District

2013's activities started with the ADM held in January. The first tower of the day was Ripley then onto Horsley. The meeting itself was held at Breadsall where we enjoyed a service, a delicious hot meal and ringing after.

Our February afternoon outing took us to Lullington (6), Overseal (8) and Netherseal (8). It was a very cold day, but attendance was good.

The striking competition heats were held at Brailsford in March. Colin Aked again kindly agreed to be the judge for the day. Etwall, Belper and Church Broughton/Sutton on the Hill entered teams for the Arthur Ashby cup, which was won by Etwall. Duffield/Muggington, Etwall and Belper entered teams for the Horsley cup which was won by the Duffield/Muggington team.

The May evening event was held at Mugginton. This fixture continues to be very popular: it was well attended and provided ringing for all abilities.

A district practice was held at the towers of Marchington and Doveridge in June.

Central District young ringers took part in the July National Youth Striking Competition which was held in York. The team, the Derbyshire Dingers, achieved an A grade in the call changes category, failing to achieve first place by only a couple of points.

In September the Young Ringers' afternoon was well attended at the easy-going eight at West Hallam. This event was well attended and good progress was made by the young ringers.

In October a training event was held at Belper. It was very successful with over 20 people attending a course on bell maintenance.

The Association Meeting and 8-bell competition were held at in October in Belper, with run-in towers of Crich and Pentrich. A team from each district was entered into the Eight bell competition which this year was won by Central.

October also saw the Quarter Peal day, which was a joint venture with the Southern District. There were eight quarter peal attempts, of which seven were successful.

In November, a visit to Burton for a tour of the brewery and museum, combined with ringing before-hand at a local church, was scheduled, but unfortunately had to be cancelled due to insufficient numbers of people expressing an interest.

Our final event for the year was December's Shop and Ring at Ashbourne. The bells were rung prior to the service, and advantage taken of Ashbourne Christmas market for last minute Christmas shopping.

The District continues to provide well-attended, sociable and enjoyable ringing events throughout the year. Thanks once again to all incumbents and tower captains for making bells available and to all participating ringers for making 2013's events a success.
