Education Committee Report

This committee started the year by discussing its terms of reference and purpose. We decided that we should primarily be responsible for fulfilling objective 2 of the DDA which is to promote the recruitment and training of bell ringers and to advance the Art of Change Ringing as well as some aspects of objective 5 which is to extend the appreciation of bell ringing among the public.

The effect of this is to add recruitment and promotion of ringing to our remit. This has already been happening this year with our committee very much involved with helping at all bookings of the new Wombel. We have managed to ensure that a committee member has been present to help erect and dismantle at all events. As more people become involved with this job the work load is diluting. The Wombel has been used at 3 Arts/Flower Festivals, 1 Village Fete, 1 Christmas Fayre and 2 Church events.

The committee also came to the conclusion that basic training up to Plain Bob is best carried out at local level with help from district reps if needed. The idea of having a training session on the morning of quarterly meetings and in that same district has proved popular. We organised a conducting for beginners workshop in Chesterfield District, which was run by John Fisher and a follow up was organised to suit the people attending. On the day of the October meeting we organised a Bell Maintenance Course which was attended by 16 people, who all received a CD of information.

Members of the committee were also involved in training the Youth Team for the National Ringing World Youth Competition in York, this team did exceptionally well coming 2nd overall with an A Grade. Another new venture has been to respond to requests by towers and organise a block of tailored help for them. The first of these was at Aston on Trent who felt stuck in a rut, four sessions were arranged to give them fresh ideas and new achievable challenges. These were well received and Sutton on the Hill have now made a similar request and arrangements are in hand for this.

The education committee is now able offer small grants in support of training initiatives, this year a grant was made to Hartshorne for educational material.

Regular training sessions continue at The Gordon Halls Ringing Centre. More ITTS courses have been arranged with 4 teachers being accredited this year and quite a few more are on the last stage of accreditation. The new band at Sandiacre continues to progress under the direction of Alec Humphrey and supported by a band of regular helpers. West Hallam, who were hosting the Sandiacre training, now look to be on the verge of restarting Sunday ringing.

If you want help or advice in training, recruitment or public relations please contact your district’s education committee representative.

Ringing World National Youth Contest (RWNYC)

The 3rd RWNYC was held at York on 6th July 2013.
Sunday afternoon practices started months before the contest at various 8-bell towers, and included a mini outing. Coaching was provided by Gill Hughes, Alec Humphrey, Susan Hall and Andrew Hall, with additional advice from John Fisher.

The competition day was hot and sunny. The team and supporters travelled to York by train from Chesterfield. Several towers in York were open for grabbing throughout the day.
The competition tower was St Lawrence, York, and our team, the Derbyshire Dingers, rang their test piece at noon.
The Derbyshire Dingers team:
1. Rosemary Hall (Old Brampton)
2. Elspeth Chatto (Belper)
3. Elizabeth French (Belper)
4. Evie Newton (Duffield)
5. Francis Gilbert (St Peter's Derby)
6. Kayleigh Topliss (Old Brampton)
7. Emily Hall (Old Brampton)
8. Jonathan Shaw (Belper)
Gill Hughes was the caller and Susan Hall the counter. Fred Parker from Belper was a reserve.

16 teams entered the contest, 12 in the call change category and 4 method ringing.

Our team rang call changes, and came 2nd in their category with a Grade A, and 2nd overall and were awarded silver medals. The judges were so impressed that they suggested they ring Grandsire Triples in the 2014 contest!

Well done Derbyshire Dingers - we are extremely proud of you!
Any young ringers under 19 years of age who are interested in ringing in the contest band are welcome to attend practices.

Our Wombel

Early in 2013 the Derby DA purchased a Wombel. This is a simulator on a frame that can be easily rung by both ringers and non-ringers. It has many uses such as recruitment, raising the profile of ringing and training and it can be used indoors or outdoors in fine weather. The Wombel is an impressive piece of equipment and comes with computer, speakers, extension cable and everything needed for its operation.

The Wombel is available for hire by members of the DDA to use at suitable events such as church fetes, carnivals, village shows or anywhere you think it could be used to recruit ringers or promote bellringing. So far it has been to 2 Arts Festivals, 1 village fete, and 4 church events. It has also been used for teaching and training at Belper, Hartshorne and Eckington giving more experienced ringers the chance to practice method ringing using Abel software. Headphones speakers and all necessary cables are supplied along with full operating instructions.

Members of the Education Committee are available to help with the erection of the Wombel and setting it up. It comes complete with a computer, speakers and headphones. An extension lead and circuit breaker are also available. It can be operated outside but not in the rain, there is a cover with it in case of rain. It stands just under 3.6 metres high and needs a ceiling height of 4 metres for erection. It needs a space of approx. 6 metres x 4 metres for assembly when erected the base size is 1.9 metres x 1.2 metres.

Anyone wishing to borrow the Wombel will need to arrange transport for it, either from Eckington, Belper or its previous location. The base is carried on the roof of a car, there are a set of cross bars available to fit any car with side bars. Two people can lift it onto the roof but four are needed at one time to get it upright after assembly. If you are unable to find a suitable vehicle the Education Committee may be able to help.
