General Secretary's Report

As usual the year’s first Association event was the Annual Dinner. The Southern District organised this at The Stuart Hotel in Derby. Canon Dave Perkins and his wife Margaret, from the Cathedral, was the guest speaker. Canon Dave entertained 50 members and friends who attended the dinner with a talk entitled “Gas Man to God’s Man” and ended by singing to us accompanying himself on his guitar.

The AGM and evening ringing was held at Darley Dale. During the afternoon ringing was also held at Ashover.

For the first time this year the Summer Meeting was combined with the finals of the six bell contests. We travelled to the Chesterfield District. The Horsley Cup final was held at Clowne judged by Dominic Travis and the Arthur Ashby Cup at Barlborough judged by Tim Poole. During the afternoon ringing took place at Scarcliffe and Sutton Scarsdale with evening ringing continuing at Eckington.

The October Meeting with the 8 Bell Contest was hosted by the Central District. The contest held at Belper was judged by Terry Astill. Afternoon ringing also took place at Crich and Pentrich with evening ringing continuing at Belper.

Competitions:-
Four teams qualified for the Horsley Cup. Derby Cathedral ringing Cambridge Surprise Minor were placed first with 229.1 points; second Darley Dale Oxford Treble Bob 193.4 points; third Old Whittington Oxford Treble Bob 183.4 points and fourth Belper Plain Bob Doubles 120 points.

Four teams also qualified for the Arthur Ashby Cup. First was Derby St Peters 207 points; second Old Brampton 205.5 points; third Belper 198.5 points and fourth Breaston 181.5 points.

The Inter District 8 bell contest was won by the Central Team with 24 faults ringing Grandsire Triples; second Chesterfield District with 31 faults ringing Plain Bob Triples; third the Peak District with 32 faults ringing Double Norwich Court Bob Major and finally Southern 33 faults ringing Cambridge Surprise Major.

Our Young Ringers entered the Ringing World National Youth Contest, which this year was held at York. Sixteen teams entered the contest. There were twelve teams entering the call change section four teams in the method section and they finished a very creditable second overall.

Tewkesbury Shield – The team from the Association won this competition again beating 7 other teams, the method this year was Stedman Caters.

The W W Worthington contest was this year hosted by the Leicester Diocese and held at Sileby. The test piece was Erin Caters with Ian Fielding judging. He placed the Association first 42.75 faults; second Birmingham 56.5 faults; Leicester Guild third 68.25 faults and Beeston fourth with 74.75 faults.

Again a team from Melbourne with Association members entered the National Twelve Bell Contest. They qualified for the finals held at Ripon where they finished seventh out of the nine teams. The method this year was Cambridge Surprise Maximus.

Finally thank you to all incumbents and tower captains for welcoming us and allowing us to ring on their bells. 2014 promises to be another busy year with commemorative ringing to mark the start of World War I in 1914, as well as other significant events during the year.
