Secretary's report

We were very saddened to learn of the deaths of Gordon Halls and Rev. St.John Smith. Our sympathies are with their families.

For those of you interested in statistics the average attendance at meetings was 22 and we have welcomed 13 new members. Meetings and District Practices were hosted in 14 towers where ringing ranged from rounds and call changes to Plain Bob Royal, Stedman Caters and Double Norwich.

We have had another good year in the Peak District and it started well with the Peak District hosting the Annual Dinner at the Maynard Arms, Grindleford with 70 members attending. We were splendidly entertained by the Derby Cathedral Hand Bell Ringers and our guest speaker Robin Turner- thanks to Angela for arranging this.

The six bell striking heats were held at Elton this year. It was well attended and the Darley Dale team went on to win, beating Derby Cathedral by 6 points. We would like to encourage more teams to enter next year, especially call change teams.

The outing this year was to Shropshire and Herefordshire and all enjoyed a sunny day with ringing at Ludlow, Leintwardine, Presteigne, Eardisland and Leominster. Many thanks to John Holmden for all the organisation and local history information about the places we visited. We also heard interesting stories of festivals involving people dressed as medieval knights riding into the church.

I am afraid the Quarter Peal Day this year was cancelled mainly due to unavailability of ringers. We hope to hold it again next year.

The District Carol Service was very well attended with 32 ringing at Edensor and Castleton. We were very thankful for the tea, coffee and cake provided by our hosts at Castleton before the service. We were joined by a few more at the Poachers Arms, Hope for a very enjoyable carvery dinner. Our thanks to John Holmden for researching the venue and negotiating the price. We discovered that the landlord was a lapsed ringer and persuaded him to consider ringing again at Hope!

We now have an augmented ring of 6 bells at Brackenfield with Philip Mehew undertaking the job of Tower Captain and training the new ringers. Hopefully Stanton-in-Peak will be inaugurated this year; ringers are currently being trained at Youlgreave and Darley Dale.

We welcome all the new ringers who have joined us over the year and hope they have enjoyed their ringing and made good progress. We would encourage them to attend as many meetings as possible - we have all been terrified in our time and assure you that it is nothing new!

I would like to thank all the committee members for their hard work over the year. I would also like to thank all the incumbents for the use of their bells, all Tower Captains and Conductors who spend so much time organising practices and quarter peals so that we all progress.

We hope 2003 will be a really good year for Bell Ringing in the Peak District.
