PEALS

Peal Secretary's Report

This has been a year of happiness and sadness. We have rung for the three jubilees of the Queen, Derby Diocese and the Cathedral and also for the deaths of the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.

Rex North, Keith Baines and Chris Booth rang their first peal, after much practice, at Brailsford. Other members rang firsts: first on 8 and first Major (Elaine Baines), first Pudsey S Major (Jim Heading), first S Royal (Terry Jeffrey) and first Stedman Cinques inside (Matthew Smith).

Peter Humphrey moved into Derbyshire and rung his first handbell peal for 32 years and Sue Peach rang her first peal for 23 years - welcome back!

Personal footnotes include Pat Halls' 2000th peal, David Sansum's 1500th peal and Frank Morton's 1500th peal on tower bells. Towers celebrating footnotes include the 500th peal in the tower at Duffield and 250th peal on the bells at Melbourne.

Belper became pealable again, and regained its top spot as leading peal tower.

Sadly, we lost two resident peal-ringing members, Gordon Halls and Denis Cooper this year. Gordon rang 1676 peals for the Association, his last was at Derby Cathedral on 19th January 2002, when he rang the treble for Pat's 2000th peal, and one that Gordon was determined to complete. His achievements are too many to mention, suffice to say that peal ringing was only a small part of Gordon's life. Gordon loved 10 bell ringing and one ambition was to ring at all the 10's in the world. Gordon rang peals at 225 different 10 bell towers and 176 of these were rung for the DDA. It was Gordon who started Derbyshire peal week in the 1970's, which has seen almost 400 peals rung by 180 ringers. Thirteen peals were rung in Gordon's memory during the year.

Denis rang 41 peals for the Association; his first peal was Little Bob Major at Ashover in 1948. He rang 27 at Bolsover, the last one in 1974.

We also said goodbye to Sam Walklate, who was not a DDA member, but rang at the Cathedral until a few years ago. Sam rang 63 peals for the Association of which the majority were on the two Derby 10's - St Andrews and the Cathedral. His first for the Derbyshire Association was in September 1950 and was his first on 10 and the last was in August 1971.

2002 also saw the loss of an old friend of the Association, Rev Roger St John Smith, one time rector of Darley Dale. Roger rang 81 peals for the Association during the 60's and 70's.

On a happy note, at long last I have collected a complete set of Annual Reports. This is only the third complete set that I know of and they have now been bound into 5 volumes. These will stay with the post of peal secretary.

This report is comprised of peals that have been published up to the beginning of February 2003.

Peal Fees

Peal fees are currently charged at 50p per rope (25p per person in handbell peals). They should be sent to the Peal Secretary, with details of the date, place and method rung. Please forward this as soon as possible after the peal has been rung, and this is particularly important if the peal was rung at the end of the year. Thank you.
Non Resident Life Membership is currently £2. Details (name, address) should be sent with the payment to the Treasurer, the Peal Secretary or a District Secretary.
