Quarter Peal Analysis & Report - 2002

This analysis and report is based upon quarter peals published in the Ringing World from issue 4736 to issue 4787. Therefore it does not include quarters which, for various reasons may not have been published. However an August 2001 quarter has been included, I would ask conductors to be prompt in submitting reports of quarters to the RW.

It has been known for details of quarters to get lost but if quarters have not appeared in the RW please ask the conductor whether they have been sent. If any quarters have appeared in the RW, which have been omitted, from this analysis please advise me of the issue number, date, or page number, and if during the course of your ringing you achieve significant milestones please include them in the report to the RW.

Where figures are quoted in brackets they are for previous years.

The number of quarters recorded for the year was 296 (349, 327, 307). The totals for both 2001 and 2000 had been increased considerably by the ringing of quarters to celebrate 2000 years of Christianity in practically every church in the Diocese. This year has seen the Peak district as the only district maintaining the same level of activity as last year. This is in part due to a number of experienced ringers who have during the last twelve months or so moved to the area and who have become regular quarter peal ringers.

The Quarter Peals Rung In Each District Are Listed Below.

There were many notable performances during the year; they include Cambridge Surprise Minor on the Lichfield Diocesan Mobile Belfry at Rolleston on Dove by a band mainly drawn from the Cathedral, Grandsire Doubles at Dinting Vale by a largely newly formed local band, Forward Major at Darley Dale, Spliced Belfast, Glasgow, London & Bristol Surprise Major at Duffield. The first quarters on the augmented eight at Scarcliffe, the augmented four at Morley, and the new six at Belper. Mention must be made of the series of quarters of Plain Bob Minor at Brailsford conducted by John Heaton. There were fifteen of them and they enabled the local band to make significant progress that would otherwise not have been achieved with such relative ease. Furthermore they culminated in a peal including three first pealers. The quarter at Manning in Western Australia was by three of the Association's Central Council members who were in Perth for the ANZAB 2002 meeting.

Amongst the many personal milestones achieved during the year were
