Peal Secretary's Report

This past year we managed an increase in peals rung by eight.   There were four tower bell peals less than last year, but an increase of twelve hand bell peals.   It's good to see a couple of keen bands in the north and south of the county.

Only one member rang their first peal this year: Chris Gilbert from St. Peter, Derby, rang a peal at his home tower in December.   How about a few more first pealers in 2004?   If anyone would like to attempt their first peal, but don't know how to arrange it, let me know and I'll try to help.

Congratulations to those achieving ‘firsts' in their peal ringing, one example is Gill Hughes ringing eight spliced at Belper.   Congratulations to Ruth and Bob Smith, Ruth for her 1000 th peal and Bob for his 1300 th handbell peal and 900 th as conductor – remarkable achievements.   Another milestone reached was by Arnold Morley ringing his 750 th peal.

We saw Lis Bowden celebrate her 50 th anniversary of her first peal, which was at Breadsall.   Lis soon became a prolific peal ringer and has rung more peals than any other lady!

Two peals were rung to welcome the birth of grandchildren and we even had eleven peals rung in memory of loved ones, including local ringers.

John Marshall from Denby rang his first peal there during 2000, along with another first pealer.   Sadly this was to be the only one.

Marjorie Phipps of Old Whittington rang seven peals during 1966-1977.   She rang in David Hird's first peal and he has now rung 759 for the Association.

Ben Cooper was the second General Secretary of the Association and rang 61 peals for the Association between 1947 and 1977.   This total includes the first peal by a Chesterfield District band; thirty-four peals were at his home tower of Bolsover.

Two friends of the Association also died this year, Eric Critchley and Brian Mills.   Eric rang his first peal for us in 1956, one in 1971 and thirteen others since the 1990's.   Brian Mills rang forty-three peals during the period 1970 – 1992; twenty-four of these were on ten bells.

I would like to finish my report with thanks to those who kindly send peal fees to me promptly as this helps greatly.   I wish you all happy peal ringing and many successes for 2004.

Peal Fees

Peal fees are currently charged at 50p per rope (25p per person in handbell peals).   They should be sent to the Peal Secretary, with details of the date, place and method rung.   Please forward this as soon as possible after the peal has been rung, and this is particularly important if the peal was rung at the end of the year.   Thank you.

Non Resident Life Membership is currently £2.   Details (name, address) should be sent with the payment to the Treasurer, the Peal Secretary or a District Secretary.
