Peal Secretary’s Report | PEAL DETAILS

Where have all the peals gone?  There were thirty less than last year, let's see if we can try and ring a few more in 2005.  Maybe your tower would like to attempt a peal to commemorate the end of World War II, on 10th July.  Maybe you will have a local event to celebrate, a new or retiring incumbent, a flower festival or other fund raising event?  What better way to mark an occasion than with a peal of bells?

Unfortunately no one rang their first peal during 2004, how about having a go this year.  If anyone would like to attempt their first peal, but doesn't know how to arrange it, let me know and I will try to help.

Congratulations to those achieving “firsts” in their peal ringing careers.  A few examples are Mike Lilley ringing Bristol at Belper, Elizabeth Nowill, Frances Haynes, Roy Meads and Geoff Goodall all ringing their first of Maximus on handbells.  Well done.

Congratulations to Robert Marchbank ringing his 1000th peal for the Association, no footnote but I make it the peal at Bonsall.  More milestones reached were Pat Halls conducting her 450th peal, and Phillip Mehew ringing his 150th for the Association, all wonderful achievements.

The new bells at Bonsall were dedicated on 9th May and a peal was rung the following week.  Let's hope at some point in the future they will be able to have some more rung there.  The end of the year saw the first peal in 21 years at Castleton.  During the peal parishioners raised funds for the Tsunami disaster.

Lots of peals were rung to celebrate special occasions.  We had several birthdays celebrated, 2nd, 21st, 50th, two 60th and a 70th.  We also had a couple of births, Samuel Evans, making Graeme & Gill Hughes grandparents, and Joshua Henry Cotton.  Sadly there were six peals rung in memory of loved ones, including local ringers.  In April, a fellow ringer passed through Derbyshire on his fund raising walk from Lands End to John O'Groats.  He stopped off at Wormhill to ring his only peal along his way, with local ringers raising over £300.

A friend of the Association, William Hall, passed away this year.  Although a ringer at Lichfield Cathedral, he worked for the Chapter at Derby Cathedral and rang 7 peals for the Association.  His peals.co.uk website always helped greatly each year compiling the peal list, saving lots of time manually searching Ringing Worlds.

I would like to finish my report with thanks to those who kindly send peal fees to me promptly.  Of course the odd few don't and have to be chased, along with new Non-Resident Life Members elected prior to a peal.  Please remember that NRLMs need to be ratified at an Association meeting.

I wish you all happy peal ringing and many successes for 2005.

Peal Fees

Peal fees are currently charged at 50p per rope.  They should be sent to the Peal Secretary, with details of the date, place and method rung.  Please forward this as soon as possible after the peal has been rung, and this is particularly important if the peal was rung at the end of the year.  Thank you.

Non Resident Life Membership is currently £2.  Details (name, address) should be sent with the payment to the Treasurer, the Peal Secretary or a District Secretary.
