Peal Secretary’s Report | Peal Details

There have been 73 peals this year, two more than last year. These have been rung with 21 less people than the previous year.

It's not often that two or more people ring their first peal together, so it is pleasing to see Pauline & John Boyle and Linda Pelc ring their first peal at Ashford in the Water. Tim Peverett celebrated his 41st birthday by ringing a peal of 41 Surprise Minor. A new method, Peckham Alliance, was rung to celebrate the wedding of Christian & Rachael Peckham of Derby Cathedral. We also celebrated the wedding of Peter & Emma Humphrey of Tideswell – Emma rung her 200th peal for the Association this year. The Taylors of Darley Dale celebrated 120 years of their family ringing at this tower.

The first two peals were rung at Brackenfield, the culmination of many years of effort. The first peal was also rung at Morley.

Peals were rung in memory of two West Hallam ringers, John Brown and Alan Burton. John rang two peals for the Association: his very first peal at Alfreton in 1954 and then one in 1977 at West Hallam, which was the first by a Sunday service band since rehanging the bells in 1922. Alan rang 3 peals, all at West Hallam. His very first was in 1965, he was also in the Sunday service band peal in 1977 and the last was rung in the year 2000. Peals were also rung in memory of five other people.

Three of the Districts celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the Association by ringing peals. Morris Bates rang his first peal of Royal in the Southern District attempt, which he thought was a quarter peal and wondered why it was taking so long!

Over the last 60 years, the Association has rung peals in 672 places – 102 of those being on handbells. It is interesting to note that 3 of the top 26 locations with over 50 peals are outside Derbyshire (admittedly Norton only moved out of the County relatively recently!). Two thirds of the locations have only been pealed once or twice. New locations for peals in 2006 were Armitage (Campanile), Brackenfield, Idrigehay (Cliffe Cottage), Morley and Tideswell (3 Market Square).
