PEAL SECRETARY’S REPORT | ANALYSIS | PEALS

There have been 89 peals this year – sixteen more than last year. 111 ringers rang the peals and there have been twice the number of handbells peal as last year. Unusually, no members rang their first peal during 2007.

The band that rung the first Association peal of Scientific Triples is to be congratulated. There have only ever been 30 peals since this tricky principle was first rung in 1958. Well done to the 'in-house' band of Marchbanks for their peal of Grandsire. Ringing celebrated the wedding of Eric Davies, previously of Shardlow, and the births of Stuart Heaton & Edward Cotton. Michael Maughan rang his 2,200th peal, Emma Humphrey rang her 400th peal and Simon Humphrey his 300th as conductor.

There have been eight new locations for peals this year. The five new towers are Burton upon Trent (St Chads), Butleigh, Paisley, Dunblane and Edinburgh (Fettes College). The three new locations for handbells are Oakwood, Stanton by Bridge and Kineton, Warwickshire – all as a result of ringers moving house.

Peals have been rung in memory of four peal ringers. Bob Tanner of West Hallam, rung 42 peals for the Association between 1965 and 1978. These were at five towers in the Ilkeston District, the majority being at Stanton by Dale and his home tower of West Hallam. Jack Dark rang 2 peals in 1963 and 1966 – there were six first pealers in these two peals! Arthur Crowder and Michael Crowder both rang in the same peal in 1956 and Michael rang a further 28 between 1999 and 2005 at Melbourne.

Peal Fees

Peal fees are currently charged at 50p per rope. They should be sent to the Peal Secretary, with details of the date, place and method rung. Please forward this as soon as possible after the peal has been rung, and this is particularly important if the peal was rung at the end of the year. Thank you.
